IF: MEMORIES

Tuesday, September 02, 2008

Here is my illustration for this week's illustrationfriday prompt MEMORIES

One of my favorite memories is that of elementary school recess. My school sat within a valley and the playground was up a small hill. I distinctly recall running full speed out the door, up the hill and straight to the merry-go-round. This merry-go-round wasn't the sissy kind with fancy horses and timpani organ and snare drums. This merry-go-round was a large metal wheel with two inch metal bars bent into handles. This was a wonderfully unsafe playground toy!

I was one of the runners. This rare and illustrious position wasn't given, it was earned--earned by relentless pushing and the occasional ride. Our goal as runners: get that thing going as fast as possible. Our riders hung on for dear life. Some were smart and found hand-holds near the center. The novices loosely gripped on the ends and were occasionally thrown off. No one was ever really hurt, but there were no doubt some bumps and scrapes.

My elementary school no longer has this glorious toy. It was replaced nearly twenty years ago by a vinyl wrapped slide/playset. Poor kids, they've missed out. It's too bad that this memory can't be there's too.

IF: PUNCHLINE

I sat down to create a piece for this week's prompt and my three-year-old daughter, Grace, worked with me. I cut some of the pieces, but the art direction and composition were all hers. She didn't like the text on the face--guess my current style is lost on her. She also question where the pretty face was. She happily accepted the cut paper circles as eyes but when she decided she needed a nose, she picked up the pencil. That's pretty interesting, to me at least. When her figure was complete, she insisted on a house. I was thinking metaphorically like when I place figures in a space (usually a roughly inked piece of paper). She wanted more than just a space, she wanted a house. The funny thing is, when I gave it to her she wasn't pleased that the person wouldn't fit INSIDE. I told her "that's okay, he can stand in front". Did I just teach her about space?

For the few that may read this (and are interested), this isn't Grace's first post. Check out this one from a few weeks back.

It has taken me 30+ years to get comfortable with my work. Grace happily sat and cut and pasted all morning with me. I am blessed!

IF: homage

Thursday, April 03, 2008

Here is my illustration for this week's illustrationfriday prompt–homage

No haiku this week, just a tribute to Robert A. Nelson.

I had Professor Nelson for printmaking during the Spring semester of my sophomore year at Millersville University. It was a Tuesday/Thursday class from 2-4 I believe. Nelson's talent was unbelievable. Watching him work was a privilege--one that I didn't realize until later. I saw his casual style and loose studio as a chance to not go to class. I'd skip either Tuesday or Thursday of the week, later I'd skip two weeks in a row. When I went back, I got working as usual and thought that nobody had noticed me missing. While working on a monoprint, Nelson came over and asked "What do you think you are doing?" I can't remember my response, but I'll never forget his question and its affect. He later told me that he did notice my absence and that I should come to class consistently or not at all.

I would be lying if I said that I never skipped a class after that, but I never did skip another one of his classes. I truly respected him for the way he spoke with me, I even spent evenings in the studio doing work to catch up. To this day, I see his influence on my work ethic.

His influence is far-reaching. I have two colleagues that pay homage through their art, style, or hairstyle. For me, I pay homage by remembering that I need to walk the walk. I can't not show up. Bob Nelson may be watching.
